The Homeleigh Mountain Scenic Drive offers Kyogle District visitors the best opportunity for koala watching. Koala habitat lines much of the roadside verge, supporting a large and well documented koala population. There are ample spots along this picturesque drive to safely pull your car off the road and try your eye at spotting koalas.
From Kyogle follow the signs towards Murwillumbah (veering right at the intersection at the bottom end (nthern)of town), after about 2klms turn right towards Cawongla, then about 3klms turn left into Homeleigh Rd ( at the top of the range). This road then does a loop, becoming Sargents Rd about 1/2 way round, and returns to the main drive towards Cawongla & Murwillumbah. The expansive views to the mountains extending beyond a quiet rural landscape offering visitors a great view of Kyogle country.
If you don’t see a koala your journey will not have been wasted, as the views across to the Border Ranges and the ancient volcanic peaks that created the landscape are impressive.
