FILM SCREENING | THE PLASTIC COUNTRY

  • Kyogle Memorial Institute | Banquet Room (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The Plastic Country is a character-led investigative journey following filmmaker Kal Glanznig as he travels across Australia to uncover the true scale of the plastic crisis.

Plastic Country follows young Australian ocean advocate Kal Glanznig on a journey across the country, investigating the growing impact of plastic pollution on our wildlife, ecosystems and human health.

From remote coastlines and wildlife hospitals to Parliament House, the film reveals how plastics have found their way into almost every corner of our environment and, increasingly, our own bodies. But it's not all doom and gloom. It also explores practical solutions and the changes needed to tackle plastic pollution at its source.

Following the screening, we'll turn our attention to local concerns, particularly the use and disposal of agricultural plastics such as silage wrap. What happens to all that plastic once it's served its purpose? What are the consequences for our soils, waterways and wildlife? And what practical alternatives or better disposal options might be available?

It's an opportunity to explore a growing environmental problem and consider what we can do about it here in the Kyogle district.

Kyogle Environment Group (KEG) will show the documentary film, The Plastic Country, at the Kyogle Memorial Institute Banquet Room on Saturday, 7 November.

It will run from 10-11.30am and entry is by donation.

SURVIVED TO THRIVE: SALT: Bearing Witness Exhibition Launch

Join us at the Roxy Gallery to celebrate the opening of Salt: Bearing Witness, a contemporary photographic exhibition by Yamatji Wadjari photographer and visual storyteller Jodie Harris.

Drawing on her ongoing photographic series 'Becalmed', Jodie uses the vast, exposed landscape of a salt lake as both subject and metaphor for the long aftermath of domestic and family violence.

Within this striking landscape, a red-clad figure moves through the frame, its identity concealed. “A becalmed vessel is not wrecked. It is stranded—without wind, unable to move under its own power—and this is the condition many women describe long after the immediate danger has passed”.

These images do not depict violence directly. Instead, they invite us to reflect on its lasting impact, the complexities of recovery and the often-unseen experiences of women navigating life beyond immediate danger.

Grounded in lived experience, Salt: Bearing Witness creates space for reflection, recognition and the stories that continue beyond the frame. This exhibition is also part of the larger open program for the Head On Photo Festival 2026.

SALT: Bearing Witness is a part of a town-wide program to end domestic violence against women during the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence. All sessions are free & open to the public.

One of Australia’s most cherished duos makes a long-awaited return to the stage. After a decade away from the spotlight, stringmansassy are back, ready to reconnect with audiences and share the music that made them one of Australia’s most cherished duos. Guitarist Aaron Hopper and vocalist Kacey Patrick are known for their inventive musicianship, dynamic interplay and heartfelt performances.

Forming their partnership in 1996, they quickly became known as stringmansassy, touring extensively across Australia and internationally from 2000 to 2014. Their unmistakable chemistry, inventive approach and deep musical intuition captivated audiences wherever they performed. Now, after a ten-year hiatus, the duo return to the stage for a much-anticipated tour, welcomed by fans eager to experience their artistry once again. Renowned for their sophisticated musicianship, Aaron and Kacey transcend the traditions of jazz and folk, crafting music often described as spellbinding, enthralling and deeply expressive. As critic Andrew MacLean noted, “Even the laws of physics are subject to subtle manipulation in stringmansassy’s world.”

Artist Talk | In Conversation with garan Hale

It starts in the forest, along riverbanks, in storms and flood-fallen limbs – timber shaped by time, weather and chance. Each piece carries this history forward, not as a flaw to be erased, but a story to be honoured.

Garan Hale works in wood. Using 100% salvaged Australian timbers, he designs and builds furniture and other unique pieces with traditional wooden. His pieces reveal how they are held together through curved laminations, dovetail cleats and morticed joints. Every joint is an invitation to look closer, to see the skill of the hand and the honesty of wood as a material.

Works in wood at Roxy Gallery, will bring together a collection of works that reflect a commitment to circular, ethical craftsmanship, showcasing an intimacy with wood as a material and its relationship with the human form.
